                     MODULE CONTENT

A sewing machine is a textile machine used as a home appliance for sewing.

Types of sewing machine

The different types of sewing machines are:

  1. Mechanical or domestic sewing Machine
  2. Electronic sewing machine
  3. Computerized sewing machine
  4. Embroidery sewing machine
  5. Overlock sewing machine

PARTS AND FUNCTION OF SEWING MACHINE

Below are some basic parts and functions of a sewing machine.

  1. Spoon pin: it is used to hold the spoon of thread in the pin on the top of the machine
  2. Needle bar: it holds the needle at one end with the help of a clamp. It is a steel rod
  3. Bobbin winder: it makes the winding of thread on the bobbin easier. Some bobbin winder stops itself when the bobbin is full.
  4. Thread guides: it Hold the thread in position from the spool to the needle.
  5. Thread Tension dial: it is used to control tension on the thread
  6. Needle bar: it is used to holds the needle at one end with the help of a clamp. It is made of a steel rod.
  7. Bobbin case: as the needle is lowered into the bobbin chamber it moves into position to catch the top thread and form the stitch.
  8. Stitch regulator: it controls the length of the stitch. Sometimes regulators can be set to stitch in reverse.
  9. Flywheel: the machine will starts working will when it rotate.
  10. Needle: it is used to form a stitch in the garments
  11. Presser foot: it holds the cloth firmly in position when lowered and it is attached to the presser bar.
  12. Presser foot lifter: This is a lever attached to the presser bar. It is use for raising and lowering the presser foot.
  13. Slide plate: it is a rectangular plate, it can be slid open to remove or put in the bobbin case.
  14. Needle plate or throat plate: This is a semicircular plate with a hole. It allow needle to pass through it and collect the bobbin thread.
  15. Face plate: it is a cover which when removed gives access to the oiling points on needle bar, presser bar and thread take-up lever.
  16. Clutch or thumb screw: it engages and disengages the stitching mechanism. It is in found in the centre of the flywheel.
  17. Feed dog: It helps to move the cloth forward while sewing and it consists of a set of teeth fitted below the needle plate.
  18. Belt: it is commonly made out of leather, but a cloth Tape, Nylon wire or any other strong rope can also be used to replace it when it is bad.
  19. Pedal: When press with foot, the machine works and it is made out of iron.
  20. Thread take up lever: the top thread passes through the thread take up lever during sewing.

  • It makes sewing to be easier and faster

  • It adds durability to seams.
  • It produces accurate stitches at whatever length and tension you desire.
