Meaning of the Pentecost

The Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit came on the apostles of Jesus, when Jesus was going back to heaven. People always celebrate the Holy Spirit the seventh Sunday after Easter to remind them of the coming of the Holy spirit on the Apostle. Before Jesus left the earth, Jesus promise to send the Holy Spirit to comfort his disciples and lead them to all truth and tell them what to do. Jesus promise was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles on the day of the Pentecost.

Events of the day of Pentecost

On the Pentecost day, the disciples were together in one accord, while they were praying, suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from down from heaven and filled the whole place where they were sitting.

The Holy Spirit rested on them like tongue of fire. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues. And people in Jerusalem saw the disciples speaking in new tongues. Some people heard them speaking their tribal language. And they said “look are all these Galileans? And how is it that we hear each o in our own language in which we were born? “And some people said “they drank new wine.”

Peter stepped forward from among the other disciples and told the people they were not drunk because it was only nine o’clock in the morning. He remembered the people what prophet Joel told them in the Old Testament that God has promise to pour upon everyone in the last days. And he told them the spiritual importance of the Holy Spirit such as

  • God will pour his spirit upon everyone.
  • Sons and daughters shall prophesy.
  • Young men shall see visions.
  • Old men shall dream dreams.
  • God will also pour his spirit on his servants.

And peter preached to them with boldness about the lordship of Christ. The people ask peter how they can have the Holy Spirit. And he told them that they have to repent and be baptize everyone in the name of Jesus Christ for their sin to be forgiven. Then the spirit of the Holy Spirit will come on them. From the crowd three thousand people believed and were baptized the same day.
