 MEANING OF BIOGRAPHY

Biography is the life history of a person.it consist of the place of origin and date of birth, education, occupation and achievements to his community or the profession and the date, place of death if the person is dead.

BIOGRAPHY OF SOME CHRISTAIN LEADERS

We have good Christian leaders that have lived a godly and a fulfilling life that we can learn from.

Some of them are:

  1. Samuel Ajayi Crowther
  2. Moses Orimoladed Tunolase
  3. Joseph Ayodele Babalola
  4. Williams F Kumuyi
  5. Anthony Olubunmi Okogie
  6. Sunday Mbang

SAMUEL AJAYI CROWTHER

Samuel Ajayi Crowther was born in 1810 at Osogun (near Oyo) Oyo State, Nigeria. At a very tender age, he was taken away as a slave.

When the ship taking slaves to American got to Freetown, the capital city  of sierra Leone, he was among those released. He received education at C.M. S primary school and Fourah – Bay College. He studied theology in England, and he was ordained as Bishop on June 28, 1864, thus becoming the first African Bishop. He married Anani who was baptized as Susan Thompson. He traveled to Nigeria and he did most of his missionary work at Abeokuta, Onitsha and Jebba.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS

He founded the Church Missionary society (CMS) and he translated the English Holy Bible and the Anglican hymn book into the Yoruba language. He died on December 31, 1891.

Lessons Learnt: God can make a nobody into a somebody. God can bring Good out of evil. Despite a slave he was the first African Bishop in Nigeria. We should always pray to God to deliver us from dangers.

MOSES ORIMOLADE TUNOLASE

He was born at Ikare Ondo State, Nigeria, in 1891. He is the founder of Cherubim and Seraphim Church. In 1925.He started preaching the gospel in 1916.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

He was bless with the power of healing through water, candle and prayer. He did his missionary work in Lagos. He built a lot of secondary schools through his missionary work.

He died in 1933 at Osokoro, Lagos but later his remains were removed from Lagos and was buried at ikare, his home town.

Lessons Learnt: we should not be afraid to start something new as long as it is the will of God.

JOSEPH AYODELE BABALOLA

Joseph Ayodele BAbalola was born in 19904 into a Christian home in Odo–Owa  Kwara State. He did in primary school at Ago-Ijaye,  Ebute –Meta, and All Saints School, Osogbo.

He was first trained as a traditional Healer at Osogbo, he was a goldsmith and an apprentice driver with the former public works Department (P.W.D),Osogbo. In 1928, God spoke to him to leave is job and become a preacher.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS

He started his gospel work at Ilesha but made Efon-Alaaya his station. He used water and prayer to perform Miracles. He is the founder of Christ Apostolic Church (C.A.C).

The Christ Apostolic Church Mission has established a lot of primary schools, secondary schools, teacher – training colleges, seminaries for training their pastors.

He died at Ede,Oyo state in 1959. He was buried at Efon –Alaaye in Ondo State.

Lessons learnt: when God calls a person. He/she should obey because God will make the Person to achieve great things.

WILLIAMS F.KUMUYI

He is a native of Erin-Ijesha, w.f Kumuyi was born on June 6, 1941 into an Anglican home. He started school in 1951.He attended Mayflower School, Ikenne and passed out in 1961.he learnt atheism and lost interest in church. He later heard a gospel messages when a gospel church came to preach in the school in 1963. On April 5, 1964, he was born again and he got involved with the Scripture Union and grew.

He attended the University of Ibadan and graduated with first –class degree in Mathematics in 1967.and later obtained a post graduate certificate in Education and he became a lecturer in 1973; he started Deeper Life Bible study Group. The church is one of the largest churches in Nigeria and in the world.

Outstanding Contributions

He founded deeper life bible church in 1973, at the University of Lagos. He started an interdenominational Bible study Group in 1973 on Monday evening with fifteen adults.in December, 1975 the first deeper life retreat was held.

He founded the International Bible Training Center to develop soul-winners, church planters, character builders, and full time minister and Christian workers.

ANTHONY OLUBUNMI OKOGIE

Anthony Olubunmi Okogie was born on 16 June, 1936. In Lagos, Nigeria. He was ordained a priest on 11 December, 1966.he holds a licentiate in sacred theology in Rome.

He served as pastoral assistant at the holy cross cathedral in Lagos. He joined the army as a chaplain and he was appointed catholic religion instructor and a chaplain in Kings College on 29 August, 1971, he was ordained titular Bishop of Mascula and Auxiliary of Oyo. He was transferred to Lagos, as Auxiliary Bishop, then on 13 April, 1973.he was nominated Archbishop of Lagos. And he was proclaimed the cardinal by john Paul II on 21 October, 2003.

Outstanding Performance

He played a role in the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and later became President of CAN. He also served as President of the Bishops Conference of Nigeria from 1994 – 2000.

He contributed greatly to the growth off catholic denomination. He was a human rights crusader and a lover of justice.

SUNDAY MBANG

Sunday Mbang was born on August 26, 1936. He was born into a clergy family. He went in music after completing his school certificate examination. He was called to serve as a priest of the Methodist Church shortly after the death of his father. Since then he has grown in faith. He hold a doctorate agree from Harvard School of Divinity. He always stand for justice, equity and fairness in the affairs of the nation. He retired in November, 2006.

Outstanding Contributions

He was former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria and also the prelate and head of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, among the leader of the Methodist Church in Africa, and also president of the word Methodist Council.

He was able to revive the oneness in the Methodist Church. Thereby saving the church from disintegration and foster spirituality among believers. He was the co- chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.
