THIRD TERM SCHEME OF WORK FOR MATHEMATICS NURSERY ONE
Third Term Nursery one Mathematics Curriculum
Week 1 & 2
Topic: More work on numbers – Introduce number 21 – 25
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to count , read , write ,
identify, match and fill in number 21-25.
Lesson: 8 Lessons
Materials: Charts and cards
Activities: As in all cases of numbers and numerations
Evaluation: As in all cases of numbers and numerations
Week 3 & 4
Topic: More work on vertical and horizontal addition using strokes . Introduce
numbers 26-30
Objectives: At the end of the lesson , pupils should be able to count and identify
1-30 as well as do simple addition of numbers .
Lesson: 8 Lessons
Material: Charts on addition and number cards
Activities: teacher guides the pupils to do activity that will aid the understanding
of simple addition –put together
Evaluation: Fill in missing numbers from 1-30
Do simple sums on addition vertically and horizontally
Week 5 & 6
Topic: Introduce the concept of zero – the spindle box and the spindles box and
more work on 1-30
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to state that zero in
Concrete term means “nothing or empty”
Lesson: 8 Lessons
Materials: Charts on numeration, spindle box and spindles
Activities: Teacher should explain to the pupils using spindle box the concept of
zero i.e “empty” and do more activities on 1-30.
Evaluation: This lesson should be evaluated practically.
Week 7 & 8
Topic: Addition vertically and horrizontanly involving zero. Work on 31-40 .
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to read, write, identify
1-40. They should also be able to add numbers vertically and horizontally involving zero.
Lesson: 8 Lessons
Materials: picture cards with numbers , pictorial addition cards and large movable numbers.
Activities: Teacher should guide pupils to add up numbers involving zero vertically
and horizontally:

Evaluation: The lesson should be evaluated practically.
Week 9
Topic: Introduce pictorial subtraction- subtraction number rods and the sign.
Objectives: Pupils should be able to understand subtraction as take away .
Lessons: 4 Lesssons
Materials: Number rods,charts and flashcards
Activities: Teacher should carry out activities that will make the child understand
that subtraction means to take away e.g these are three balls, if one is taken away
how many is left? Ans: 2 balls. Pupils should also be taught the subtraction sign(-).
Week 10
Topic: Introduce vertical and horizontal addition and subtraction – using strokes
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to identify and use
addition and subtraction signs – ,+
Lessons: 4 Lessons
Materials: Counters, charts on subtraction
Activities: Teacher should carry out activities on subtraction with the pupils 5 – 3
= 2 ,

A lot of work in this category should be done this way to aid understanding.
Evaluation: Teacher should evaluate the lesson practically.
Week 11
Topic: Revision, termly test, examination and closing.
