                        MODULE CONTENT

THE COMING OF CHRISTIAN IN NIGERIA

 In the 15thh century, Augustinian and Capuchin monks brought Christianity to Nigeria. They were the Portuguese that arrived Nigeria through the Benin River, they made contact with the people of Itsekiris in Warri delta state. They failed to convert the people to Christian because they were not serious with the missionary work but were actively involved in slave trade.in the 16th century the missionaries make use of Roman Catholicism to preach to the people. The missionaries were able to convert the son of Olu from the Itsekiri Kingdom in Warri. Delta state.

 In the 17th century the Roman Catholic missionaries also arrived Nigeria to establish Christianity. They went into various undeveloped places in Nigeria. They trade and preach to the people. They visited the king of Benin and Warri but most of the elders and rulers were more concerned with what they were selling like gun, mirrors. They were not able to establish any church.

After four century. The first mission of the Church of England was established in 1842 in Badagry by Henry Townsend. The mission church is known today as the Anglican Church.

After some years, On 11 December 1842, Thomas Birch Freeman arrived Abeokuta. He always meet with Henry Townsend every 24th of December. This brings about the first celebration of the birth of Jesus in Nigeria.

Years after the mission of Rev. Henry Townsend. Rev. Andrew Desalu Wilhelm laid the foundation of Nigeria’s first church in Ake, Abeokuta. The church, which is known as the cathedral church of St. Peters, it was completed in 1898. Missionaries from different countries met there and spread the word of God to the people of Abeokuta it neigbourhood.

However, in the Nineteenth Century there was efforts by churches like the Anglicans, Methodists, and Baptists Presbyterians, in Nigeria, the Afro-Brazilians also returned to Benin and Nigeria with Catholicism.

ACTIVITIES OF THE EARLY MISSIONARIES IN NIGERIA

The growth of Christianity has had important impact on culture, education, politics and many other aspects of our social life. A lot of traditional practices such as oath swearing, blood pacts, oracles, vows, divination and secret societies among others were declared taboos and irrelevant by Christians missionaries. Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary in Nigeria. She worked tirelessly for women and children’s right. She was able to stop the practice of killing of twins among the Efik people in southern Nigeria.
