THIRD TERM MATHEMATICS SCHEME OF WORK FOR PRIMARY FOUR (4)
WEEK 1 CONTENTS
- ESTIMATING LENGTHS AND COMPARING MEASUREMENT
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- estimate distance in kilometer and meters e.g. estimate the width or Heights of:
- the height of tall tree
- height of girl
- Height of door to the nearest half Centimeters. Then measure them.
- Compare measurements in meters and kilo meters. E.g. Olu walks to school which is a quarter of a kilometer from his House. If it takes him 15 minutes to get to school, how many metres does he walk?
1 kelometre (km) = 1000 metre(m)
1/4KM = 100*1/4 metres
= 1000m/4 = 250 metres
- ADDITIONAL SUBTRACTION OF LENGTHS
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- Add length in kilometres and metres. E.g. 7km + 3km + 654 + 24m
- Subtract length in kilometres and metres e.g 9km – 3km – 374m
QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Solve quantitative aptitude problems involving lengths.
E = 15km: p = 14km, j = 28km, m =75km. what is
- E + P
- M – j
- (15 + 14) km = 29km
- (75 – 28)km = 47km
WEEK 2 CONTENT: WEIGHT
- Addition and Subtraction of Weights
- Multiplication of Weight in Kilograms by whole numbers
- Division of weight on Kilograms and Grams by whole Numbers.
- Word problems on weight.
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- Solve problems on weight of objects e.g. 245 + 416g = 661g
- Solve problems on multiplication of weight in kg and grams b whole numbers. E.g. (a) 428g * 2 (b) 4kg52g* 4
- Solve problems on division of weight on kg and g by whole number. (a) 428g * 2 (b) 4kg 350g/5.
Weight some object in their classroom environment.
Examples: A table weights 15kg, a box weights 10kg, a book weights 5kg
- What is the difference between the weight of a table and a book?
- Which two items weight the same as the third item?
QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Solve quantitative aptitude problems involving weights.
WEEK 3 CONTENTS: TIME, CALENDER AND DATES
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- Identify the seconds, minutes and hour hands on a clock
- Tell the time on the clock
- Read the calendar and recite 60 seconds make 1 minutes rhyme table of times.
QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Solve exercises on quantitative aptitude problems related to time.
E.g. in 24 hours clock
- 13 hours = ————- pm
- 18 hours = —————pm
- 03 hour = —————- am
WEEK 4 CONTENTS
- Area of Rectangles Square
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- State the properties of a square
- State the properties of a rectangle
- Find area of rectangles using the Formula i.e L * B sq unit or L * W sq unit, where: L = Length, B = Breath, W = Wealth. Note: B = W
- Calculate areas involving square metres and hectares.
- Develop interest in finding areas of shapes in their Environment.
- QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Solve problems on quantitative reasoning related to areas.
WEEK 5 CONTENTS
- Capacity Addition and subtraction in litres
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- Recapitulate the standard measurement of some liquid e.g. Bottle of coke, a gallon of Kerosene, table water.
- Convert litres to centiliters accurately e.g 1000cl = 1L
- Add in litres correctly. E.g 9.45L + 3.54 L = 12.99L
- Subtract in litres correctly. E.g 8.6L – 4.35L
- QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Solve problems on quantitative reasoning related to capacity.
WEEK 6 CONTENTS
- Capacity: multiplication and Division in litres
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- Multiply in litres by whole Numbers e.g 6.7L * 5 = 33.5L
- Divide a litres by whole Numbers e.g 3.5L /5 = 0.65L
- Appreciate litre as the unit of Capacity.
- QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Guide pupils to solve problems on quantitative Reasoning.
WEEK 7 CONTENT: PLANE SHAPES e.g. Rectangle Equilateral, isosceles triangle, Rhombus Trapezium, Kite Parallelogram. Etc.
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
- State meaning of symmetry
- Identify symmetrical plane shapes e.g. Square etc.
- Locate line(s) of Symmetry of plane figures at school and Homes.
- Identify right angle, acute and obtuse angle in plane shapes.
- Identify north (N), South(s), East (E) and west (W).
- Distinguish between horizontal and vertical line.
WEEK 8 CONTENTS: THREE (3) DIMENSIONAL SHAPES E.G CUBOIDS, CUBE AND CYLINDERS.
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Pupils should be able to:
